Supermarket chain Hy-Vee announced it is currently conducting a recall for two varieties of cream cheese due to potential salmonella contamination, with its bulk-packaged Cookies & Cream snack mix also affected.

Hy-Vee made this decision after being notified of the possible salmonella contamination by the third-party manufacturers of said products, according to an announcement released by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Which Hy-vee products are being recalled for Salmonella?

The cream cheese spreads subject to the recall are the eight-ounce Hy-Vee whipped cream cheese spread with use-by dates of Aug. 7 and Aug. 14, and the 12-ounce Hy-Vee cream cheese spread with a use-by date of Sept. 1.

As well as these, four-ounce packages of Hy-Vee to-go Cookies & Cream mix and 16-ounce packages of Hy-Vee Cookies & Cream Mix with certain use-by dates were recalled.

A spokesperson for Hy-Vee told FOX that “these two recalls are being made after two suppliers issued larger recalls for their products around the country. The candy item is related to the public Palmer Candy recall that occurred yesterday.”

Which states have the contaminated Hy-vee cream cheese?

The FDA said that “the affected products were distributed to Hy-Vee, Hy-Vee Drugstore and Dollar Fresh Market locations – as well as Hy-Vee Fast and Fresh convenience stores – across the company’s eight-state region of Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin”. They also stated that nobody had been confirmed as ill due to the possible contamination.

What are the symptoms of Salmonella?

According to a desription on the FDA website, Salmonella is “an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems”. As for healthy people infected with Salmonella, they canoften experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain”.

Hy-Vee has voluntarily removed all affected items listed above from its shelves. Customers who purchased the product should dispose of the product or return it to their local Hy-Vee store for a full refund.
