If you greet others in elevators, psychology suggests you may have hidden motivations

The simple greeting in the elevator, rather than completely ignoring a fellow passenger, reveals more than you may think.

You call the elevator on your way to the garage at seven in the morning. You are not exactly in the best mood after a restless night, and a long workday is waiting ahead. All you want is to get into the car, turn on the radio and make the trip in peace.

Then the doors open – and your morning instantly changes. Standing inside is someone who just happens to be heading to the same place as you. Do you step in and say hello, or do you avoid any kind of interaction, pretending the other person is not even there?

According to psychologists, the answer may reveal key aspects of your personality. People who greet others in elevators are often associated with high levels of extroversion, empathy and secure attachment. Studies suggest that even a simple greeting acknowledges the other person’s presence, eases tension and can subconsciously act as a signal of peace.

The hidden psychology behind a simple elevator greeting

For some people, saying hello may also serve a deeper psychological purpose – though not necessarily a negative one. Greeting someone can become a way of controlling an uncomfortable situation in a confined space where, however unlikely, there is always the possibility of getting stuck together. Once the greeting is returned, the elevator can immediately feel safer and less awkward.

The opposite reaction tends to trigger very different emotions. Avoiding a greeting is often linked to anxiety, mental overload or the need to protect personal space. A psychological barrier forms almost instantly, and that feeling can become even stronger if an initial greeting is ignored altogether.
