The Italian police have recently filed a complaint for aggravated fraud against the State against a 54-year-old Italian man who was keeping the body of his 78-year-old mother hidden in a freezer so that he could continue to collect her pension. A truly macabre discovery.

The body of Rosanna Pilloni was discovered during a search of the home she shared with her son, Sandro Mallus, after police were alerted to the woman’s prolonged absence, public broadcaster Rai reported. The incident took place in the municipality of Sarroch, on the island of Sardinia.

The facts

Although Mallus, an old acquaintance of the police, has not been able to specify how long he would have kept his mother’s body hidden, he has indicated that the death occurred four years ago, specifically in 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic.

According to neighbours, mother and son lived in very precarious economic conditions. Although we will have to wait for the autopsy, it is believed that the woman died of natural causes. Mallus is currently facing a crime of aggravated fraud against the State and concealment of a corpse.

Sadly, this isn’t the first time a story like this has hit the headlines but fortunately a rare occurrance. Police arrested a Chicago-area woman last year who had kept her mother in a freezer for two years. She pled guilty to concealing a death and possessing a fraudulent ID card and was sentenced to 18 months on each count.
