Lao Tzu, Chinese philosopher: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”
The ancient text Tao Te Ching is the foundational work of Taoism and integral to Chinese philosophy guiding people to find “the Way”.

Some journeys in life can be a walk in the park while others may take you down a long and windy road and the mere thought of setting out can seem overwhelming. However, the saying by Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” reminds us that even the greatest undertakings begin with a simple action.
The saying comes from the Tao Te Ching, which is the foundational work of Taoism and integral to Chinese philosophy. That seminal text was developed roughly 2,500 years ago during the turbulent Warring States period in China and has been helping guide people to find “the Way” and the art of living ever since.
“A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent upon arriving”
The Tao Te Ching consists of 81 verses that provide practical wisdom on how to live one’s life in harmony with nature. Lao Tzu said you don’t live life, but instead let life live you. “The Tao nourishes by not forcing. By not dominating, the Master leads.”
Lao Tzu advised internal reflection and embracing solitude “thus the Master travels all day without leaving home.” By knowing yourself he says we achieve true wisdom; by mastering yourself you attain true power.
The philosopher preached for us to have an open-mind and observe the world around us. “Not-knowing is true knowledge. Presuming to know is a disease. First realize that you are sick; then you can move toward health,” he said. “Those who know don’t talk. Those who talk don’t know.”
He also warned against greed, saying the people should desire non-desire. “When there is no desire, all things are at peace.” Lao Tzu advised to let things take their course and remain “as calm at the end as at the beginning.”
Lao Tzu also observed that “a good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent upon arriving.”
