McDonald’s all-day breakfast: The reason why the fast food restaurant ditched the McD fan favorite

The much-loved choice at McDonald’s was taken off the menu in a hugely unpopular decision.

Update:

The 2015 decision from McDonald’s to serve their breakfast all day every day was met with parties on the streets and a national holiday granted from the President. OK, maybe I’m mis-remembering, but it was certainly a hugely popular move from the fast-food chain.

So, when they removed the item from the menu completely in 2020, many people simply - and logically -blamed the pandemic as the root cause of the disaster: this is not true.

Former McDonald’s corporate chef Mike Haracz recently revealed that the pandemic actually had nothing to do with all-day breakfast getting the boot; it was long gone from the plans of the business before then.

Pandemic not the reason for All-Day Breakfast drop

The pandemic was a perfect storm for McDonald’s, who had a welcome ‘reason’ to bin off the fan-fave. The real reason why the McDonald’s All-day Breakfast was killed off was it was just not profitable in terms of time or space used up in making it.

“I bet McDonald’s is happy you think the pandemic killed the All-Day breakfast!”, he admitted, “McDonald’s wanted to get rid of All-Day Breakfast well before the pandemic happened. The issue with it is that it takes up the real estate in the kitchen that can be used for lunch and dinner service.”

“Instead of all of the resources being used for lunch or dinner service, now you need to split that up, meaning crew had to cook food more often to replenish things. It was what they call ‘operationally complex’. Owner operators did not want the All-Day Breakfast, no matter how much you, the people, wanted it."

“People are going to come anyway, let’s just make them order what we normally have. It was not the pandemic, it was the owner operators, McDonald’s wanting to be as profitable as possible.”
