Tax season is about to begin in the United States.

However, the Internal Revenue Service is still dealing with delays of millions of refunds from previous seasons, according to a new report from the National Taxpayer Advocate, an independent watchdog that is part of the same government agency.

Why hasn’t the IRS issued my refund?

Recently, the tax collection agency received new funding through the Inflation Reduction Act. This was meant to improve the agency’s technology to go after tax evaders and meet taxpayer demands. However, delays in issuing refunds continue to be a recurring issue.

According to taxpayer advocate Erin M. Collins, the IRS continues to face challenges with refunds due to the large number of paper returns received annually.

According to official information from the agency, more than 10 million physical tax returns are received each year, which delays their processing. Returns sent digitally are handled much faster.
