Holy Thursday 2022: Pope Francis to preside over Chrism Mass

As part of the 2022 Holy Week celebrations, Pope Francis is scheduled to preside over the Chrism Mass in the Vatican on the morning of Holy Thursday.

What is the Chrism Mass?

The Chrism Mass honours the institution of priesthood, and celebrates priests’ unity with the bishop of their diocese. Its name is a reference to the holy oils that are blessed as part of the service, before being used in the sacraments throughout the year ahead.

Chrism Mass: what time does it start?

The Chrism Mass is to be held at St Peter’s Basilica at 9:30am local time (CEST) on Thursday 14 April 2022. In the US, that’s 12:30am PT and 3:30am ET.

No Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Vatican schedule

The current Vatican schedule for Holy Week does not list an Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper.

The service, which in 2021 was presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the College of Cardinals, commemorates Jesus’ last supper - the final meal he shared with his disciples before his crucifixion.
