A massive power outage has affected more than 1.2 million Puerto Rico residents on New Year's Eve. When will electricity be restored across the island?

A massive power outage has affected more than 1.2 million of the 1.47 million Luma Energy customers in Puerto Rico, according to the private company that provides electricity transmission and distribution services on the Caribbean island.

The company said in a statement on Tuesday that it will likely take between 24 and 48 hours to restore electricity across the island, although power has already been restored in some areas.

Luma says the blackout was caused by a failure of an underground power line.

Service restored in some medical facilities

The company said a medical center and San Juan Municipal Hospital were up and running, and that it would provide further updates on the restoration of service across the island every two hours.

“LUMA has activated its Emergency Operations Center and is currently working with Genera and other generation partners to restart the electrical system and restore power following an island-wide blackout that began at 5:30 a.m.,” the company’s statement said.
