Razzie Awards

The Oscars return at on Sunday 12 March 2023 from Los Angeles.

Movie lovers, may know that before the Oscars take place, another award show, the Razzies, take place where winners take home a golden raspberry. These are the anti-Oscars, and are given out before the Academy Awards, and that are awarded to the “worst” big screen performances each year.

This award show, like many others, is not without controversy. However, this year, many critics believed that the jokes were taken too far, especially the choice to create an award category was named after Bruce Willis, who retired from acting due to aphasia. In addition, the choice to nominate thirteen-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong, for Worst Actress, was seen as so cruel by critics that the group withdrew Armstrong from the running.

The Razzies voting members, however, had no problem giving ‘Blonde’ the award for Worst Screenplay and Worst Picture. Critics argued that the film was “misogynistic and false” and said that those who financed the film were “blatantly exploiting the memory of the late Marilyn Monroe.” All this while Ana de Armas heads to the Oscars, where she is nominated for Best Actress.

Finally, one positive point from this gala was the awarding of actor Colin Farrell the Razzie Redeemer which is given to an actor who has “reclaimed their wings and emerged from Razzie hell.” Colin Farrell has a chance to take home the award for Best Actor at the Oscars this weekend.
