Update:

Rite Aid will close all of its stores in the United States. From having more than 4,500 locations in the early 2000s, the company will close its remaining stores after filing for bankruptcy once again.

The company first filed for bankruptcy in October 2023 amid mounting debt and after facing hundreds of lawsuits for its alleged role in the opioid crisis.

In a statement, the company said it would “implement a strategic sale process that maximizes the value of substantially all of its assets.” “To facilitate this process, the Company and its subsidiaries voluntarily initiated Chapter 11 proceedings in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey,” it shared.

“For more than 60 years, Rite Aid has been a proud provider of pharmacy services and products to our loyal customers,” said Matt Schroeder, Chief Executive Officer of Rite Aid. ”While we have continued to face financial challenges, intensified by the rapidly evolving retail and healthcare landscapes in which we operate, we are encouraged by meaningful interest from a number of potential national and regional strategic acquirors. As we move forward, our key priorities are ensuring uninterrupted pharmacy services for our customers and preserving jobs for as many associates as possible.”
