Sad news for film fans: This movie theater chain is going bankrupt
A popular theater chain has filed for bankruptcy yet again, putting its future in doubt.
CMX Cinemas, a Miami-based movie theater chain known for its luxury and dine-in experiences, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy — again.
This is the second time in five years the company has turned to the courts for financial restructuring. CMX currently runs 28 theatres across eight U.S. states and says it plans to keep them open while it reorganises.
Let’s get technical for a moment: the company filed under Subchapter V, a simplified version of Chapter 11 that is meant to help smaller businesses restructure more quickly and cheaply. CMX, for its part, says it has enough cash on hand and expects to emerge from bankruptcy as early as Q3 2025.
Specifically, the company reported having between $50 million and $100 million in assets, with liabilities ranging from $1 million to $10 million, according to its bankruptcy filing.
They say that staff will keep getting paid, and customers shouldn’t see much change — at least for now.
CW Theaters offers some of the most affordable first-run movie tickets around, with a flat $7 rate for adults every day, for any show. There are even discounts that drop the price to $5 which can be accessed by all of: military members, veterans, hospital staff, first responders, seniors 55 and up, and kids 12 and under.
