Take a look at the new Jimmy Carter stamp revealed by USPS, inspired by this portrait

Former US President Jimmy Carter Jimmy Carter to be honored with a new commemorative stamp this fall, the US Postal Service announced this week.

Carter, the 39th US president, passed away on December 29, 2024, almost three months after celebrating his 100th birthday.

Designed by Ethel Kessler, the Jimmy Carter Forever stamp is based on an oil-on-linen study by renowned American portrait artist Herbert Abrams painted in 1982 - one year after Carter left office. The official portrait was hung on a wall in the State Floor of the White House on March 17 1983.

“The stamp program celebrates the best in American culture, places and people, and it is difficult to consider a more fitting honoree than former President Jimmy Carter," Peter Pastre the Postal Service’s government relations and public policy vice president said in a statement. “In his support and leadership of his beloved community, state, and nation, he lent his quiet, thoughtful and deliberate energy around causes he believed in, and most certainly in his conduct and accomplishments as a former President, Jimmy Carter truly personified the best in America. I am honored to participate in the reveal of this stamp art which fully evokes his humanity”.

Forever stamps were first introduced in 2007 with their price fixed at the standard First-Class mail cost. Current First-Class mail rates start at $0.78.

The President Jimmy Carter commemorative Forever stamp will be available to purchase on October 1 in Atlanta, on what would have been former President Carter’s 101st birthday.
