When looking for advice on the best plants for your home, a space agency probably wouldn’t be top of mind as a source of information.

However, when it comes to a specific quality you are looking for- in this case, purifying the air- NASA certainly has something to say. After all, the agency had to look for the best way to clean the air and convert carbon dioxide into oxygen in the limited room in space stations.

Indoor plants can significantly purify air

Back in the 1980s, they published a clean air study to find out which plants are best at detoxifying indoor air. The findings recommended that people have at least one plant for every hundred square feet of living space.

Although other studies have indicated that you would need more plants than this recommended number to effectively clean the air, the houseplants included in NASA’s list have been proven to improve air quality.

These plants are known to filter and remove key air toxins found in the home. Among the most common of these poisonous particles are formaldehyde, which is found in building materials and fabrics; benzene, found in detergents, plastics, and synthetic fibers; and trichloroethylene, which is present in adhesives, paints, and dry-cleaned clothes.
