The appliance in your home that uses four times more energy than a washing machine
An old appliance can increase your bill compared to modern, energy-efficient models.

Many homes still rely on an appliance that drives up energy consumption: the old air conditioner. According to energy efficiency experts, these units can use up to four times more energy than a modern, efficient washing machine.
The contrast is striking. A Class A washing machine typically consumes between 0.40 and 0.60 kWh per full cycle, even when using hot water. In comparison, an air conditioner that is more than 15 years old can burn through 1.5 to 2.5 kWh per hour of operation. In just a few hours, it can use as much energy as several washes combined.
The main issue is outdated technology. Older models lack inverter systems, which adjust power output based on temperature. Instead, they run continuously at full load, leading to higher consumption and steeper electricity bills—especially in summer.
Keeping one of these obsolete units can mean more than 300 extra kWh per year, a significant cost for households. With rising energy prices, that difference becomes even more noticeable on monthly bills.
Experts stress that efficiency is the key. “The difference lies in the level of efficiency, and older equipment consumes the most energy,” regulatory agencies explain.
The best solution is to replace old appliances with A+++ inverter models, which can cut consumption by up to 40%. Regular maintenance is also essential—cleaning filters, checking refrigerant levels, and ensuring responsible use.
