The end of an era? Macy’s confirms closure of iconic store and sets liquidation date

Early this year, Macy’s released a list of 66 stores that it plans to close, the majority of which will be shuttered in the first quarter of 2025. This is part of the retailer’s “Bold New Chapter strategy” announced in February last year, with which Macy’s plans “to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth.”

“Closing any store is never easy,” said Tony Spring, chairman and CEO of Macy’s, Inc. in a press release. “But as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service.”

By 2026, Macy’s will be closing around 150 locations in total that are “underproductive,” but at the same time will be investing in 350 “go-forward” locations.

Macy’s home state of New York is one of the places that will see the most store closures in this latest round with 9 locations scheduled to shutter. One of those is the Macy’s at 397 Greece Ridge Center in Rochester.

The final day the location will be open to shoppers will be 11 April, 2025, according to El Cronista. It will be a sad day for the 50 people who work there and the customers they serve.

However, it will also provide an opportunity for shoppers looking to find a deal as the store liquidates stock ahead of the closure.
