The reason why Henry Cavill won’t be in the new Superman movie
The 39-year-old first played Clark Kent nearly a decade ago but Cavill will now step aside and pass on the iconic cape.
Less than two months after Harry Cavill announced on Instagram that he would reprise his role as Superman in an upcoming film, the actor has now confirmed that he will not be donning the famous cape again.
“I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone,” he announced on Wednesday. “I will, after all, not be returning as Superman.”
“After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life,” he added.
“The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”
It appears that Gunn, the new co-chairman of DC Studios and director of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, plans to move Clark Kent in a new direction. It seems the next films will focus more on the superhero at a younger age, marking a significant shift in the studio’s output.
Cavill thanks fans for support
The British actor first played Superman in Man of Steel (2013) and featured in three subsequent films. His final outing in the iconic suit came in a brief uncredited cameo in Black Adam, released earlier this year.
Looking back on his time playing one of the most iconic characters in film history, Cavill said that he has fond memories of playing Clark Kent and his heroic alter-ego.
“For those who have been by my side through the years…..we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember….Superman is still around,” he said.
“Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.”
