Held on the third Monday in January, MLK Day commemorates the birthday of a man who was a leading figure in the American civil rights movement in the middle of the 20th century. Born on January 15, 1929, King played a significant role in bringing an end to the US’s racial segregation laws and in advancing the rights of Black Americans. He was assassinated in April 1968.

When was Martin Luther King Day introduced?
Designated as a federal holiday by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, Martin Luther King Day was first observed three years later. It is also known as a day of service - “a day on, not a day off” - on which Americans are urged to volunteer for charitable organizations to help their communities.
MLK Day is one of only two US federal holidays that commemorate someone’s birthday. The other is Presidents’ Day, which is held on the third Monday in February, to mark the birthday of George Washington, the country’s first president.
