When is Donald Trump going to be inaugurated? This is the date of the oath of office ceremony

Donald Trump is set to be inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States on Monday, January 20, 2025. The oath of office ceremony will take place at noon Eastern Time (ET) on the west front of the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.

This date is mandated by the 20th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which stipulates that presidential terms begin and end at noon on January 20th following a presidential election.

The constitution's 20th amendment

"The terms of the President and the Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January, and the terms of Senators and Representatives at noon on the 3d day of January, of the years in which such terms would have ended if this article had not been ratified; and the terms of their successors shall then begin."

The timing ensures a smooth transition of power between administrations.

The day’s events will begin early, with security screening gates opening at 5 a.m. ET. The inaugural ceremony itself is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. ET, leading up to the swearing-in at noon. Chief Justice John Roberts is expected to administer the oath of office to Trump, as is customary for the Chief Justice.

Notably, the 2025 Inauguration Day coincides with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday. This overlap has only occurred once before in U.S. history, during Bill Clinton’s second inauguration in 1997.
