Update:

Full airports, even fuller bags, crying kids, and did I give you my passport? worries all mean flying can be hard enough without having to think about food and drink.

Since the advent of commercial flight, passengers have been subjected to in-flight meals that have taken on a reputation of their own as being not worthy for the pooch sitting at my feet as I type this - but it seems things are changing.

Mark Wiens, the food-travel blogger behind Migrationology, recently shared his experiences testing business-class dining from ten Star Alliance flights during a round-the-world culinary journey.

He put various airlines up against each other and published the results.

At the top of the pile sit the trio of United Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and Air India, who all stood out with their tasty offerings.

For example, the American Airlines flight food, going from Lisbon to New York and then onto Hong Kong, saw Wiens order smoked salmon (which he described as “excellent”) before ordering beef short rib on the second leg of the journey. This was the standout performer, and was awarded the description of “incredibly tender and juicy and full of flavour... about as gourmet and classy as airplane food that I’ve ever experienced.”

The ingredients - assorted cheeses, crusty bread, olives, fruit, spreads, omelet, potato wedges, spinach, and honeycomb - as well as the top-tier service on the Turkish Airlines flight from Muscat to Istanbul and onto Rome was described by Wiens as “seriously good dining”.

As for the Air India flight, that took him from Bangkok to Mumbai before heading to Muscat, Wiens called the food both “fantastic” and “excellent”, adding that he was “honestly quite impressed” with the quality.
