This European city has asked tourists to stop stealing cobblestones: Up to 70 go missing every month
City councillors have complained about the growing cost of repairing the damage and people are disrespecting ‘centuries of history’.

Known as the ‘Venice of the North’, Bruges/Brugge is one of Belgium’s most popular tourist destinations with the city offering something for every travellers taste.
The entire historic city center of Bruges has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and walking its cobbled streets truly feels like stepping back in time.

The historic center of Bruges is largely pedestrianized, making it ideal for exploring on foot but an issue has developed in the city with tourists stealing pieces of the famous cobblestones.
Stone thiefs
City councillor Franky Demon recently announced that iconic local spots like Vismarkt, Minnewater, the Grand Palace and the Grutthuse Museum are apparently losing between 50 and 70 cobblestones each month.
‘We ask for nothing but respect. Walking in Bruges means treading on centuries of history,’ said the councillor, according to The Brussels Times, ‘Please leave these stones where they belong.’
