Douglas Emhoff first made history books as the first second gentleman of the country, and now he could potentially become the first first gentleman as well.

Emhoff, husband of Kamala Harris, has long been vocal about his support for the vice president’s political career. Soon after Harris announced she was gunning for the presidency of the United States, Emhoff posted on Instagram: “Time to make history, @KamalaHarris,” as he held up a sign saying “Harris for President.”

Douglas Craig Emhoff is a lawyer who earned his law degree from USC Gould School of Law, and his Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Northridge.

He began his legal career as an associate at Pillsbury Winthrop’s litigation group, and eventually worked for several prestigious law firms, specializing in entertainment and intellectual property law. These firms include Whitwell Jacoby Emhoff, which he co-founded, and Venable, which acquired Whitwell Jacoby Emhoff. He served as a partner in the firm’s offices in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

Emhoff became a partner at DLA Piper, from which he took a leave of absence when Harris ran for vice president. He left the law firm after he became the second gentleman.

After suspending his practice of law, Emhoff joined academia and started teaching law courses at the Georgetown University Law Center.

After taking on his new role, Emhoff played to his strengths, advocating access to legal aid and removing all kinds of barriers to ensure people receive the assistance they need to arrive at justice.

As the first Jewish spouse of a vice president or president, he often has public engagements to speak out against antisemitism. He has also spoken on issues like gender equality, reproductive rights, and support for small businesses.

Harris and Emhoff first met in 2013 on a blind date set up by a mutual friend, and were married a year later. The two celebrated their 10th anniversary in August.

Emhoff has two adult children, Cole and Ella, from a previous marriage to Kerstin Emhoff, a film producer. Cole and Ella call Harris “Momala.”
