Three weeks since the disappearance of Ana María Knezevich in Madrid: what authorities know so far
Asociación SOS Desaparecidos

Ana María Knezevich Henao, a 40-year-old American woman, disappeared on 2 February in Spain’s capital, Madrid. It has been more than 20 days since she went missing, but no details have been released as to her disappearance, sparking interest across social media platforms.

Many questions remain unanswered. Was she kidnapped? Did she meet someone on the day she disappeared? Was she pretending to have a successful life when, in reality, it was full of problems? Why did she change plans that had been scheduled for several days? Those following the case hope Ana Maria is found safe and healthy and that the authorities are able to solve the mystery soon.

The facts of the case

Two of Ana María’s friends received strange messages on the 3 February. In these messages, she told them that she had met someone and they were heading to a place two hours from Madrid with limited coverage. Yet, the messages were sent three hours apart, one in English and the other in Spanish, with inappropriate phrases that made her friends suspect that Ana María did not send them. The next day, one of her friends tried to locate her at her house but she did not answer, so they called the police. The firefighters entered the house through a window but found nothing suspicious. There was some disorder, but none of Ana María’s belongings were missing. The next day, a complaint was filed with the National Police, and an official investigation into her disappearance began. So far, investigators have made no breaks in the case.

Joaquín Amills, the president of the SOS Desaparecidos Association, emphasized the need to track the geolocation of her phone, copy her SIM card, review footage from multiple cameras in the Salamanca neighborhood, and gather all possible testimonies to find her. In his 14 years of service, he recalls only a few similar cases ending tragically. Ana María is 1.45 meters tall, with a slim build, long brown wavy hair, and brown eyes.

Many questions, few answers

The primary suspect is her husband, with whom she had shared substantial assets and had financial disagreements. Knezevich, of Serbian origin, had multiple passports with different identities but claimed to have no knowledge of the situation. The divorce from her husband, David Knezevich, has not yet been finalized. However, she still decided to move to Spain, where she has been living in a Salamanca neighborhood. According to one of her friends, her last known movements before disappearing were to visit another apartment as part of her search for a permanent place to settle down in the capital city.

The main suspect: her husband

Ana María was not romantically involved with anyone at the time of her disappearance, as confirmed by her close circle. However, the suspicion has prompted her family and friends to launch a crowdfunding campaign to finance a private investigator to aid in her search. The coming week is crucial in the investigation.
