Update:

Donald Trump has hinted that the conflict between the United States and Iran could soon end, revealing that the two countries have held “very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities.”

In a post on Truth Social, written all in capital letters, the president said he had ordered a five-day postponement of any military strikes in Iran, with discussions set to continue during the ceasefire.

Trump’s Truth Social post draws attention

“I AM PLEASED TO REPORT THAT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND THE COUNTRY OF IRAN, HAVE HAD, OVER THE LAST TWO DAYS, VERY GOOD AND PRODUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS REGARDING A COMPLETE AND TOTAL RESOLUTION OF OUR HOSTILITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST,” Trump wrote.

“BASED ON THE TENOR AND TONE OF THESE IN-DEPTH, DETAILED, AND CONSTRUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS, WHICH WILL CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE WEEK, I HAVE INSTRUCTED THE DEPARTMENT OF WAR TO POSTPONE ANY AND ALL MILITARY STRIKES AGAINST IRANIAN POWER PLANTS AND ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE FOR A FIVE-DAY PERIOD, SUBJECT TO THE SUCCESS OF THE ONGOING MEETINGS AND DISCUSSIONS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP”

The post was quickly deleted and reposted with a minor grammar correction, adding a “D” to “PLEASE” in the opening sentence.

Markets respond almost immediately

Within minutes of Trump’s post, global markets reacted sharply.

According to BBC News business journalist Nick Edser, Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, fell 13 percent to around $96 a barrel in roughly 15 minutes after the post went live.

West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. benchmark, dropped 8 percent to $90 a barrel, about $10 below earlier trading levels, according to CNN.
