Heavy snowfall is expected from the southern Rocky Mountains across the south-central and eastern plains to the mid-Atlantic. Widespread freezing rain and sleet are also expected from parts of central Texas to the lower Mississippi Valley, and likely into parts of the Carolinas. These conditions will result in snow-covered roads and reduced visibility, as well as potential power outages and tree damage.
The winter storm is expected to begin affecting parts of the southern plains on Friday, then expand eastward into the Tennessee Valley and the Southeast on Saturday, and subsequently into the Mid-Atlantic over the weekend.
Dangerously cold temperatures predicted this weekend
According to the Weather Prediction Center (WPC), dangerously cold weather is expected for northerly parts of the United States this weekend. The agency predicts that the Arctic weather systems will extend southward, bringing freezing cold temperatures to much of the central and eastern United States, especially the Upper Midwest (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota), where wind chills could reach -40°F.
The frigid temperatures are expected to begin on Thursday, with extreme cold expected across the weekend. Those conditions will spread across the central plains on Friday and toward the Gulf and eastern coasts.
Looking ahead to next week, temperatures should begin to moderate across Monday and Tuesday. For more information and the latest forecasts and alerts, visit the official website of the National Weather Service (NWS).
