Update:

The United States Navy are set to begin a project that will see an all-new nuclear attack submarine built by 2040.

Known as the U.S. Navy’s SSN(X) program, it was first publicly discussed in 2014. The project has since advanced and has reportedly been at the centre of discussions regarding military spending and the new craft is said to be prepared to carry its very own on-board nuclear reactor.

The Congressional Research Service say that this new type of submarine, which is to be the successor to the Virginia and Seawolf classes, would be bigger, faster and more advanced than all of the current models in existence, marking a new era in underwater warfare and security.

New submarine ‘designed to counter growing threat’

A nuclear propulsion system (LEU) will be at the heart of the new technology to power it through the waters of the world, a system that is being touted as a much safer option than the currently used uranium (HEU) method.

Recent reports on the project have estimated the spending to be in the region of $6.7 billion to $7.0 billion, and the craft will have a submerged displacement of approximately 10,100 tons, 11 percent greater than the SSN-21 design.

The Navy themselves have actually made public their ideology behind the technology, saying that the SSN(X) “will be designed to counter the growing threat posed by near peer adversary competition for undersea supremacy. It will provide greater speed, increased [torpedo] payload capacity, improved acoustic superiority and non-acoustic signatures, and higher operational availability. SSN(X) will conduct full spectrum undersea warfare and be able to coordinate with a larger contingent of off-hull vehicles, sensors, and friendly forces.”

In the CRS report, they say that “Navy officials have stated that the Navy wants the SSN(X) to incorporate the speed and payload of the Navy’s fast and heavily armed Seawolf (SSN-21) class SSN design, the acoustic quietness and sensors of the Virginia-class design, and the operational availability and service life of the Columbia-class design", pushing the United States to an all-new level of surveillance.
