Update:

Wells Fargo has suffered a tumultuous couple of years, with the company coming under scrutiny for opening millions of accounts without the title holders' consent as employees faced serious pressure to meet unattainable targets.

More than 2,000 branches have been shuttered since 2017

These scandals have come at a time of great change for major banks, as online banking offers customers a way to handle some of their financial needs without making a trip to a physical branch. Starting in 2017, Wells Fargo executives announced that they would begin to downsize the number of branches.

In 2018, a total of 295 locations were closed, following more than 224 closures in 2017. Though closures slowed in 2019, falling to 195, but rose rapidly in 2020 when more than 630 branches closed their doors in communities across the country. Between 2021 and 2024, an additional 928 branches were shuttered, bringing the total closures to 2,280 since 2017. Over the same period, less than 100 branches were established, highlighting the net loss over the seven years, since downsizing Wells Fargo’s physical presence was announced by the bank’s leadership.
