Medicare and Medicaid are the two largest federal health insurance programs in the United States, but are not the only ones. The US also has a popular program that provides medical coverage to infants, it is the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

Since its inception in 1997, CHIP has played a crucial role in reducing the uninsured rate among children in the United States. It has helped millions of children gain access to affordable healthcare services and improve their overall well-being.

What is CHIP, the Children’s Health Insurance Program?

The Children's Health Insurance Program is designed to provide low-cost health coverage for children. Eligible families are those who do not earn enough to purchase private health insurance, but whose income exceeds the admission threshold for Medicaid.

While CHIP is a federal program, it is administered at the state level, which means that covered services, as well as eligibility requirements, depend solely on the state in which where their beneficiaries reside.

However, there are some general requirements: Children must be under 19 years of age and have no health insurance.

What services does CHIP offer?

Exact services vary by state, however, most include doctor visits, prescription drugs, hospital care at local hospitals, immunizations, vision, dental and hearing, help with transportation to your doctor, and mental health services.

Does it have any cost?

The cost of the program will depend on the income of the families. In some cases, coverage may be free, while in others modest enrollment fees may be required. There are also premiums, as well as copayments for specific services. The rest of the services are paid by the federal government and your state.
