Halloween is one of the most popular holidays in the US, with around 70% of Americans expected to participate in the spooky celebration this year. It’s one of the largest commercial holidays after Christmas, and projections indicate that consumers are going to spend even more for Halloween 2023.

The National Retail Federation expects Americans to spend $12.2 billion this year, with approximately a third of that amount coming from costume sales.

What will be the most popular Halloween costumes for 2023? Barbie, Swift & Kelce…

“Barbie” has earned over a billion dollars at the box office, and is the highest-grossing domestic movie of the year. It is therefore understandable that Barbie-inspired looks will be among the most popular costumes of the season, with almost two million planning to dress up in pink. You can choose from many outfits in the movie and easily create your own ensemble, from wearing all-pink to donning your best Ken beachwear.

Another costume that you are likely to spot during Halloween festivities is a couple outfit composed of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. Their reported romance has captured the imagination of Swifties, and the pop star-football star combo is a fun get-up which is easy to assemble yourself.

Wednesday and the Addams Family are also top picks for Halloween after the success of the recently- released series, while Super Mario Bros. And Teenage Mutant Turtles movies released this year also sparked an interest in these characters’ costumes.

Actors prohibited from dressing up as Barbie

Those who are involved in the acting industry are not likely to appear in these TV/movie-inspired costumes. The SAG-AFTRA labor union has issued some strict Halloween costume guidelines for striking actors.

The guild is banning actors from dressing as famous characters from certain movies and shows and then posting these images on social media.

Witches and vampires still top favorites

Aside from these pop culture costumes, scary classics are still a top choice. The National Retail Federation says that 5.8 million people intend to don a witch costume, while 2.4 million others are planning to wear fangs and dress as a vampire.
