“What’s wrong with parents these days?” The name this couple chose for their baby makes waves on the internet

Update:

In early July, a TikTok video by the couple @rissquan21 announcing their newborn son’s name, “Secure Arris Roberts,” ignited a firestorm of online debate. The clip, which has quickly racked up more than 2 million views, featured them dropping marbles from a heart-shaped piñata that spelled out the baby’s name in silver letters.

The internet’s reaction was swift and largely negative. Online profiles took aim at the name as odd, awkward, or even potentially psychologically burdensome on the youngster. One quipped, “Until he becomes insecure,” while others felt the parents were putting in place unrealistic expectations for their child.

One particularly harsh remark read, “Secure? You guys owe him an apology.” On Reddit, one user wrote that “people thought that it was a prank”, with another hoping that “no one is that stupid.”

In a follow-up video, the parents offered context. They explained the name follows an “S‑A‑R” naming theme: each child’s name begins with “S” to symbolise strength, honouring the father, whose name begins with that letter.

Despite the criticism, the couple have stood firm on their desire for a truly unique name, one they believe few others will opt for. The father revealed he chose the first name “Secure,” while the mother came up with “Arris” as a middle name.

According to NameBerry, the most common ‘controversial’ baby name in the United States in 2024 was Adonis, closely followed by Azriel, Blair, Bohdi, Cohen, Dixie, Gunner, and Jamie. Jamie? you ask. Yes—Jamie. For a girl.
