Pope Francis, whose birth name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was born on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The son of Italian immigrants, he grew up in a humble, working-class environment.

In 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed him cardinal. His work in Buenos Aires was notable for his closeness to the people, his simple life, and his commitment to the poor and marginalized.

Before his death on Monday, April 21, 2025, Pope Francis belonged to the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuit order. This Catholic religious order was founded by Saint Ignatius of Loyola in 1540.
