The founder of the Cash App and current CPO MobileCoin, Bob Lee, was stabbed to death in San Fransisco this morning. The news is shocking for many bay area residents, and particularly those in the financial-tech sector, where major players are well acquainted with one another.
Many are mourning the loss in the Bay area and beyond
Lee was forty-three years old, and his friend, Bill Barhydt, announced on Twitter that he was a father and “a generous decent human being.”

Bob was a dad, the former CTO of Square where he created Cash App & CTO of Mobile Coin. He was a generous decent human being who didn’t deserve to be killed.https://t.co/RnzA1Idpun
Rick Lee, the victim’s father, spoke about the loss of his son earlier today as well. The two had been living together in recent years, and in addition to the pain of losing his son, Lee also referred to Bob as his best friend. Bob’s father moved to Mill Valley from Miami to live with his son after the death of his wife in 2019. In his statement, he said that “life has been an adventure with two bachelors living together, and I’m so happy that we were able to become so close these last years.” Like others, Rick Lee noted the generosity of his son, that was very accepting and “adhered to a strict no-judgment philosophy.”
“Bobby worked harder than anyone and was the smartest person I have ever known. He will be missed by all those that knew him. Thank you to those who have reached out in support,” said Rick Lee. In response to the deadly murder, members of the San Fransisco community have begun leaving flowers at the site of the crime.
