A unanimous choice for the National League Cy Young Award in 2025: the Pirates’ third
He beat out Cristopher Sanchez of the Philadelphia Phillies and Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Cy Young Award winners for both leagues were revealed, and Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes claimed the National League honor after a historic second season in Major League Baseball.
Skenes earned the award unanimously, finishing ahead of Dominican left-hander Cristopher Sánchez of the Philadelphia Phillies and Japan’s Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Notably, Sánchez received all 30 second-place votes.
The 23-year-old right-hander led MLB with a 1.97 ERA, and with this achievement joins Dwight Gooden and Mexico’s Fernando Valenzuela as the only pitchers ever to win both Rookie of the Year and Cy Young Awards within their first two seasons.

Skenes also becomes just the third pitcher in Pirates history to earn a Cy Young, following Vernon Law in 1960 and Doug Drabek in 1990.
