Team Dominican Republic
Just a few weeks ago, there was no weak point to the Dominican Republic’s WBC campaign at all. And then injury started pulling a few of their strings apart, first Vladimir Guerrero Jr, then Juan Soto, and Luis Castillo. Some of those may be able to make an appearance in the games, but they are not the sure-thing powerhouse of early January. They still have Manny Machado, Rafael Devers, and Jeremy Peña, so they are not exactly in trouble, but there is a faint glimmer of hope for other teams around them.
Team Venezuela
A team who have regularly been overlooked when it comes to deep runs in this competition, Venezuela is a sleeping tiger. Their bullpen might not be as dazzling as the Dominican Republic’s is but their bats are if anything more impressive. Jose Altuve, Gleyber Torres, and Ronald Acuña Jr will lead the way in an order that can hit the paint off of any team’s rotation.

The Dominican Republic have the best pitching rotation in the tournament, there is no doubt about that. But in this tournament, good hitting always beats good pitching. And while the Dominicans are strong on the mound, they have some big players missing from their lineup, a problem that Venezuela doesn’t seem to suffer from. While it will be a close and exciting game, the Venezuelans could pull off a huge upset by toppling the tournament favorites at the first hurdle.
