Update:

Just a few days after his MLB debut, rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin has been given a historic contract extension with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The 19-year-old signed a record-breaking nine-year contract extension worth $140 million, with incentives that could push the total value to around $150 million, according to multiple reports. The contract will keep him in Pittsburgh through 2034 and is the largest contract in Pirates history.

Konnor Griffin contract details

Griffin’s new deal guarantees him:

  • $140 million over 9 years
  • Up to $150 million with incentives

That averages out to roughly:

  • $15.5 million per year (base value)
  • Potentially $16.6+ million annually with bonuses

The deal surpasses the previous franchise record set by Bryan Reynolds (8 years, $106.75 million), making Griffin the highest-paid player in Pirates history. Even more notably, it’s one of the richest contracts ever given to a player with little to no MLB service time.

Why the Pirates made Griffin the highest-paid player in franchise history

Griffin has been widely viewed as the No. 1 prospect in baseball entering 2026. A five-tool player with elite speed, power, and defense, Griffin is a fast riser who dominated every level of the minors

In 2025 alone, he hit .333 average, 21 home runs, 94 RBIs, and 65 stolen bases across multiple levels. He then surged through Triple-A early in 2026, batting .438 in a brief stint, before earning his call-up.

The Pirates didn’t want to wait. Instead of risking rising costs later, they locked in their potential franchise cornerstone now.

This contract is significant beyond just the dollar amount. Griffin was drafted No. 9 overall in 2024, signed a $6.5 million bonus out of high school, and reached the majors before turning 20 years old. That makes him one of the youngest players ever to secure a deal of this magnitude and a centerpiece of Pittsburgh’s long-term rebuild.

Immediate impact at the MLB level

Griffin didn’t waste time making an impression. In his MLB debut, he delivered an RBI double in his first at-bat. While early results have been mixed (as expected for a teenage rookie), the Pirates are clearly betting on long-term development, not short-term production.

This move signals a major philosophical shift for Pittsburgh. Historically, the Pirates have been cautious spenders. But by committing $140+ million to Griffin, they’re planning to build around elite young talent. They are pairing him with ace Paul Skenes as franchise cornerstones and sending a message to fans that the rebuild is accelerating.

It’s also a gamble. Griffin has fewer than a handful of MLB games under his belt. But the Pirates are betting that his upside outweighs the risk.
