Update:

One name in particular has been turning heads all season long in the MLB, and it’s not one of the more popular figures that we all agree are at the top of the tree when it comes to baseball.

Wilyer Abreu, the 25-year-old from Maracaibo in Venezuela, has been having a simply sensational season and is the talk of the town week after week in MLB.

In Sunday’s Red Sox rout of the Cardinals, chants of ‘MVP’ could be heard from the stands, filled with fans who were as surprised as they were impressed by yet another solid showing from Abreu.

He turned in a .483 batting average and a .595 on-base percentage, both which ended up being the highest of any Red Sox player in history through the first 10 games with a minimum of 25 plate appearances.

‘Obviously this is way better than I expected’

I felt confident when I left spring training that I was healthy and ready to have a very good season,” Abreu admitted to astounded reporters through translator Carlos Villoria Benítez, per MassLive’s Christopher Smith. “Obviously this is way better than I expected.”

“Try to use the whole field,” added Abreu. “It’s a huge help — even more here at Fenway when we try to use the Monster to our advantage. If I’m able to do that consistently, it’s going to be a very good year for me.”

His numbers are mind-blowing: Wilyer Abreu ranks at the top, alongside José Ramírez, in the MLB OPS leaderboard so far this season.

The Venezuelan currently leads the league with 1.325 OPS, the product of an eye-popping .424 on-base percentage and .537 slugging percentage over 33 at-bats. While it’s a small sample size, his early-season dominance is indeed catching the eye of many, especially for a such a young player still establishing his name at the top level.

As mentioned, the season pro José Ramírez is right behind him with a 1.318 OPS, backed up by a .438 OBP and a monstrous .880 slugging percentage over 25 at-bats. However, despite his peak form numbers, Abreu is still managing to stay ahead and keep his name on the lips of fans, pundits and other players alike.
