Update:

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has confirmed that he will not continue with the Toronto Blue Jays and will enter free agency in 2026 after failing to reach a new agreement with the Canadian franchise. According to reports, the Jays did not offer a figure close to the player’s financial expectations.

From what we know, Toronto offered Guerrero Jr. a contract worth $350 million, but the player was expecting a figure closer to $500 million. Guerrero aims to follow in the footsteps of players like Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto, who have signed highly-lucrative contracts.

Ohtani signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, while Soto secured a 15-year, $765 million deal with the New York Mets. These record-breaking contracts have set a high bar for the league’s elite players.

“They had their numbers, I had mine,” Guerrero Jr. told the media.

The Canadian-Dominican player maintained an impressive offensive line last season, hitting .323/.396/.544 with 44 doubles, 30 home runs, and 103 RBIs.

Which franchises could sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr?

With free agency on the horizon, several franchises are likely to show interest in Guerrero. His performance in the upcoming MLB season will be crucial in determining the offers he might receive.

The top potential destinations for Guerrero include the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, and even the New York Yankees. However, Guerrero mentioned a couple of years ago that he wouldn’t sign with the Yankees.

Potential next destinations for Guerrero Jr

  • Boston Red Sox: The Red Sox have both the financial muscle and the prospect capital to make a strong bid for Guerrero. Adding him to their lineup could significantly boost their chances of contending in the AL East
  • New York Mets: Known for their willingness to spend big, the Mets could be a top contender for Guerrero's services. Pairing him with Juan Soto would create a formidable duo in their lineup
  • Los Angeles Dodgers: The Dodgers are always in the mix for top-tier talent. Their deep pockets and competitive roster make them a likely destination for Guerrero.
  • Chicago Cubs: With a young and promising roster, the Cubs could benefit greatly from Guerrero's power and presence in the lineup. They have the resources to make a competitive offer
  • San Francisco Giants: The Giants have been looking to add a big bat to their lineup. Guerrero could be the perfect fit to help them compete in the NL West

“I think they’re interested in Vlad Guerrero. I believe Boston loves Vlad Guerrero, and as a free agent, if he doesn’t sign with the Blue Jays, I think Boston could have a good chance,” said respected insider Jon Heyman of Bleacher Report.

The Red Sox are reportedly among the early favorites to land Guerrero Jr. next offseason. With their financial resources and need for a power hitter, Boston could be a strong contender for his services.
