Texas Rangers surprise entry in race to sign Roki Sasaki

The hottest property in this off season is the Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki, and while the Dodgers are seen as frontrunners, the race is only getting started.

In the heart of Texas, where baseball’s rhythm beats as steadily as a summer cicada’s song, the Rangers are making waves. They’re stepping into the spotlight, aiming to sign Japanese pitching sensation Roki Sasaki. This 23-year-old right-hander, known for his blistering fastball and precision on the mound, has caught the eyes of many in Major League Baseball.

Sasaki’s journey from the Chiba Lotte Marines to the MLB has been a topic of conversation for months. With the international signing period opening on January 15, teams are positioning themselves to make compelling offers. The Rangers, with their $6.2 million in international bonus pool money, are among the seven teams that have met with Sasaki, signaling their serious interest.

The process of signing Sasaki is intricate. Due to MLB’s international signing rules, teams can only use their bonus pool money for such signings. This levels the playing field, allowing teams like the Rangers to compete with larger market franchises. However, many teams have already allocated portions of their bonus pools to other international prospects. To make room for Sasaki, they might need to reconsider these commitments. The Dodgers, for instance, have reportedly adjusted their plans, leading to some prospects choosing to sign elsewhere.

The Rangers' strategy will become evident as the signing period unfolds. If they refrain from announcing significant international signings or engage in trades to increase their bonus pool - MLB rules permit teams to acquire up to 60% more - they’re likely making a concerted effort to secure Sasaki. Such maneuvers would allow them to offer a more competitive package, potentially increasing their pool to nearly $10 million.

Sasaki’s talent is undeniable. His fastball has been clocked at over 100 mph, and he boasts a repertoire that has dominated hitters in Japan’s NPB. In April 2022, he pitched a perfect game, striking out 19 batters and setting a world record with 13 consecutive strikeouts. His performance has drawn comparisons to some of the game’s greats, and his transition to MLB is highly anticipated.

The Rangers' pursuit of Sasaki reflects their commitment to strengthening their pitching rotation and making a statement in the league. As the international signing period begins, all eyes will be on Texas to see if they can bring this Japanese phenom to Arlington.
