Yankees keep defying the odds despite another major setback
The New York Yankees have been plagued by injuries this season, yet they remain at the top of the American League East.

The New York Yankees have been plagued by injuries throughout the season, but they’re still clinging to first place in the MLB’s American League East with a 45-33 record. The division remains tight, with the Tampa Bay Rays (43-35), Toronto Blue Jays (41-36), Boston Red Sox (40-39), and Baltimore Orioles (34-44) all in the mix.
Prior to today’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:

•Placed LHP Ryan Yarbrough on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to 6/20) with a right oblique strain.
•Recalled LHP Jayvien Sandridge (#88) from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Yarbrough enters Yankees’ treatment room: what injury does he have?
The Bronx Bombers’ already-depleted pitching staff suffered another blow at the weekend. Right-hander Ryan Yarbrough was diagnosed with a right oblique strain and placed on the 15-day injured list.
It’s yet another setback for a Yankees rotation that’s been in survival mode for much of the year. In response, the team called up two arms from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre: rookie Allan Winans, who has been lights-out with a perfect 7–0 record and a minuscule 0.90 ERA, and lefty Jayvien Sandridge, who also gets a shot at the big leagues.
Yarbrough, a versatile right-hander, had been solid in a hybrid role this season, posting a 3–1 record with a 3.90 ERA over eight starts and eight relief appearances.
Yankees’ current injury list
New York continues to navigate the season without three of its most important pitchers: ace Gerrit Cole (recovering from Tommy John surgery), Luis Gil (lat strain), and Marcus Stroman (left knee inflammation).
The Yankees’ ability to stay atop the standings despite the setbacks has been impressive—but with the division race heating up, the margin for error is shrinking.
