While fans the world over have marveled at players like Steph Curry for years, it may well be that the sharpshooter and others like him have changed the complexion of the game. Indeed, the NBA does not look like it once used to with many more players opting or long-range solutions to the challenge of opponents.

Adam Silver intends to solve the 3-point problem

According to reports, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has plans to address the volume of three-pointers that NBA players are taking. Having heard a multitude of complaints from fans, Silver appears to have understood that there is in fact a problem that must be tackled.

During an appearance on Wednesday on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Silver was asked about the phenomenon and the commissioner stated that a change is going to come. “As stewards of the game, Joe Dumars leads our competition committee here. We will tweak it, and we will correct those issues,” Silver said.

Continuing, Silver went into specifics about the problem and the intended changes. “What do we do to change it? I agree to the extent that you start to see very similar offenses around the league. Teams have brands, teams have identities, Joe Dumars is a colleague now at the league office, the Bad Boys, etc... the Showtime Lakers. So, I recognize that to the extent that offenses start to look very similar, we lose that.”

Interestingly, the commissioner also mentioned that the league can’t do too much as it attempts to take on the concerns of fans, fearing that it might result in the opposite i.e., basketball that is played only in the paint. For context, one must consider the performance of the Boston Celtics this season who have attempted a league-high 49.4 three-pointers a game but only converted 36.2% of them. The Celtics are averaging 90.8 field goals per game, which is to say 54.4% of their shots are coming from beyond the arc. Ultimately, it will be interesting to see how the NBA deals with the rise of three-three pointers, something that has become an issue for many fans.
