Update:

The Houston Rockets will once again be without Kevin Durant for a critical Game 6 against the Los Angeles Lakers, extending one of the most unusual injury absences of the 2026 NBA playoffs.

KD ruled out for Rockets Game 6 vs. Lakers

According to NBA insider Shams Charania, Durant is dealing with a left ankle bone bruise and will miss his fifth game in the series, leaving Houston to continue its unlikely postseason run without its biggest star.

Durant initially missed Game 1 due to a tendon issue before suffering a separate bone bruise that has now sidelined him for more than a week, with medical timelines reportedly requiring at least a two-week recovery period.

Rockets lean on young core in Durant’s absence

Without Durant on the floor, Houston has turned to one of the youngest rotations in the playoffs, a group that has unexpectedly kept the series alive against the Lakers.

Players such as Amen Thompson, Reed Sheppard, Tari Eason, Jabari Smith Jr., and Alperen Şengün have taken on expanded roles, helping Houston win two straight games after falling into a 3–0 series deficit.

As Charania noted, the group has already made NBA history. “They’re the youngest starting five to win a playoff game,” he added.

Despite being undermanned, Houston has now become just the 16th team in NBA history to force a Game 6 after trailing 3–0 in a playoff series. After dropping the first three games, the Rockets have responded with back-to-back wins, shifting the pressure back onto the Lakers as the series returns for Game 6.

No team in NBA history has ever completed a 3–0 comeback in a playoff series. Now, Houston stands one win away from forcing a winner-take-all Game 7, but still without the player they were built around. Durant’s continued absence has reshaped the entire series narrative, turning what was expected to be a star-driven matchup into a test of depth, youth, and resilience.
