LA Lakers star mistakenly detained by 25+ police: what happened to Dennis Schroder?
Schroder was intercepted by officers who he said “were armed” and seemed to believe he had been part of a crime.
The latest victory of the Los Angeles Lakers over the San Antonio Spurs will likely always remain with LA star Dennis Schroder, and not because of a great performance on the floor. More memorable, for less than positive reasons, was the confusion shortly afterwards that could have ended with the German player landing in jail, as he revealed on his YouTube channel with a video entitled ‘I got pulled over by over 25 police cars and got handcuffed’.
What happened to Lakers’ Schroder with police?
The point guard, who left the pavilion after the match, headed home with his friend Alex, who was at the wheel of the vehicle, while the player was in the back with his Normatec, a piece of therapy equipment that facilitates muscle recovery. Suddenly, he explains, a police car got in their way, but they both didn’t care too much.
The situation began to worsen when the agents put on the blue lights and asked them to take the next exit to stop the vehicle.
“We saw blue lights and we thought they wanted to stop us. And then there was a voice saying, ‘Please take the next exit and stop,’” he said.
“Alex rolled down the window and told me ‘They’re stopping us.’ I said do what they say and then there will be no problems.” The officers asked both of them to get out of the vehicle and not make any strange movements.
"I slowly took off my Normatec so they don't see anything strange and I put on some pants because I do the treatment without them," says the German, who got out of the car barefoot.
“I walked slowly towards them and they asked me to put my hands on my head. I listened to everything they said and followed their instructions.”
It was only a matter of seconds before one of them put his hands behind his back to immobilize him with handcuffs, which, he suggests, highlighted the “aggressiveness” of the agents at the time of the arrest.
Schroder: “They told me the vehicle was stolen”
Subsequently, the agents explained to Schroder the reason for him being detained was associated with the alleged theft of a vehicle, which supposedly matched the license plate of his Cadillac.
“I did not know what was happening and they told me that the car was not mine and that it was stolen. I told them that there had to be a mistake because that is my car. The license plate was that of my Cadillac.”
“I told them that I had two Cadilacs and that one of them was sold, although I still owned it,” he added. In fact, the German says that there were around 30 police officers at the place where they were intercepted after leaving what was once the Staples Center.
“They told me they didn’t know that and believed me, but in the end about 30 police cars came. They were armed with shotguns, pistols and other weapons. It looked like I was a criminal who did something. It was crazy. I had never seen anything like it”.
Finally, the episode ended in good way with the policemen themselves confirming that it was indeed a mix-up and in turn recognized their mistake.
“I told a friend to record it in case something terrible happened and people could see it. Then they found the error and everything was fine. Luckily nothing happened to anyone and we returned home safe and sound,” he concluded.
