What did the Las Vegas Aces’ Kelsey Plum say to new part owner Tom Brady?
Though he may be part of the franchise’s ownership, it hasn’t stopped some of the team’s players from making jokes at the expense of the legendary QB.
As has been well documented, the seven-time Super Bowl winner has been steadily increasing his investment portfolio since retiring from the NFL. With a stake in the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces, the part owner made an appearance at the team’s first game of the WNBA finals and as you can imagine, it was well received.
Aces’ Kelsey Plum jokes at Tom Brady’s expense
You might not know this but the Las Vegas Aces’ Kelsey Plum has been a fan of Tom Brady’s for quite some time. To that end, it came as somewhat of a cheeky surprise when the Aces guard spoke about the new minority owner during the postgame press conference on Sunday. Following her team’s 99-82 win against the New York Liberty in Game 1 of the 2023 WNBA Finals, Plum disclosed what she had to say to Brady who was sat courtside with a number of celebrities on Sunday night.
“I looked at him and I said, ‘It’s about effing time you showed up,’” Plum said during her post-game press conference. “But what I love about him was he was just like, ‘You already know.’ Just super excited for his investment in our franchise and understanding what that means for us, and not just us, but the league. And putting eyes on us. I joke around, but man, it’s been awesome to have him and I know he cares.”
Kelsey Plum and Tom Brady have been here before
While we can imagine that Brady was impressed with her 26 points and five rebounds - a career-high - it’s interesting to note that this isn’t the first time that the pair have had an exchange. Last season, the iconic signal caller attended an Aces game and so, like Sunday night was sat courtside. At the time it appeared to be too much for Plum to take, as she was seen not just making a fuss about her favorite athlete, but shouting at him as well, something which many including her teammates found a bit puzzling, something she later addressed. Nonetheless, it appears that Brady wasn’t bothered as Plum received a signed jersey afterward. Indeed, one could venture to say that the two have built up a rapport.
Tom Brady & the Las Vegas Aces
If you missed our previous report, it was earlier this year when Brady decided to purchase a stake in the franchise from owner Mark Davis. For the purpose of clarity, that purchase was officially approved by the league’s owners last week.
“I am very excited to be part of the Las Vegas Aces organization,” Brady said in a March statement when the deal was first announced. “My love for women’s sports began at a young age when I would tag along to all my older sisters’ games - They were by far the best athletes in our house! We celebrated their accomplishments together as a family, and they remain a great inspiration to me. ...I have always been a huge fan of women’s sports, and I admire the work that the Aces’ players, staff, and the WNBA continue to do to grow the sport and empower future generations of athletes. To be able to contribute in any way to that mission as a member of the Aces organization is an incredible honor.”
