The new/old experiment of the NBA All-Star game didn’t pan out as expected. Despite returning to the classic format of a game between the two conferences, the “pickup game” that the match turned into resulted in a wave of criticism unlike anything seen before. In a historic outcome, the Eastern Conference surpassed 200 points for the first time in such a significant game, making it clear that intensity and defense are no longer a priority.

Record-breaking NBA All-Star game

The 2024 edition will go down in history as the highest-scoring All-Star game ever, with almost 400 points scored between the East and the West – that’s around an average of eight points per minute. Ultimately, the Atlantic Conference emerged victorious with 211 points scored against the Pacific Conference’s 183.

The night in Indiana also left several records that will be hard to surpass:

- Most points by one team: 211 (previously 196)

- Most combined points: 397 (previously 374)

- Most points in one half: 107 (previously 104)

- Most combined points in one half: 204 (previously 191)

- Most three-pointers by one team: 42 (previously 36)

- Most combined three-pointers: 67 (previously 62)

- Most points by a player in one quarter: Towns with 31 (previously Tatum with 27)

- Most points by a player in one half: Towns with 40 (previously Tatum with 38)

Who was the 2024 NBA All-Star game MVP?

The decision on who was the best player of the night was contentious. Several players scored over thirty points, with Towns reaching the half-ton mark by the end of the night.

However, it was Damian Lillard who ended up winning the MVP after scoring 39 points (11/23 from three-point range), grabbing three rebounds, and dishing out six assists. This decision didn’t go down too well with the local crowd who audibly expressed their displeasure with loud boos. Indiana showed their local pride by giving the Pacers’ Tyrese Haliburton the honorary MVP title.
