The Missouri Tigers and the Iowa Hawkeyes see out 2024 at the Music City Bowl - the only bowl game slated for Monday ahead of New Year’s Eve.

This will be both programs' first appearance in the Music City Bowl, named in honor of host city, music-loving Nashville and which has been one of the postseason highlights of the festive calendar since 1998.

Curiously, the Hawkeyes and the Tigers, who were due to play the 2020 edition which was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic. Four years on, the SEC team wand the Big Ten team will now finally be able to contest the trophy.

Missouri ended the regular season 9-3 and seventh in the Southeastern Conference with defeats to Texas A&M, Alabama and South Carolina but managed to finish strong with wins against Mississippi State and Arkansas.

Mizzou head coach Eli Drinkwitz says his team is really looking forward to Monday’s game: “Our team has had an excellent week of practice so far and they’re really excited about the opportunity to play. We spent last week working on fundamentals and continuing to sharpen our techniques, preparing for Iowa. When you have a bowl game - location, bowl gifts and the opponent is what really sets up for a really good bowl game. And this, has all three“.

Drinkwitz also revealed that Luther Burden, Armand Membou and Chuck Hicks have all left - the first two will be declaring for the 2025 NFL draft while Hicks has opted out as he wants to spend more time with his family. Brett Norfleet is ruled out after undergoing surgery.

Iowa (8-4) meanwhile finished fifth in the Big Ten and also finished the season strong with wins in their last two games against Maryland and Nebraska.

Kirk Ferentz is one of the most experienced coaches when it comes to bowl games. This will be his 21st and he was full of praise for the opponent his team will be facing in Nasville. “Really good team in the SEC, had some outstanding games this year. They’ve got some veteran players where it really counts. They haven’t lost a bowl game since coach Drinkwitz has been there. It’ll be a tough game for us, no question about that. Regarding the bowl, it’s obviously a significant accomplishment for our football team. Mid-season we were teetering a little bit and the guys came back, really rallied and won four out of the last five games - really proud of their effort”.

Ferentz, whose bowl record with Iowa is 9-11, also announced that two quarterbacks have joined the program Hank Brown and Jimmy Sullivan although neither is in line to play on Monday.

Brendan Sullivan will be the starting QB in the Music City Bowl with Jackson Stratton as backup.
