Brock Purdy injury update: Will the 49ers’ QB be able to play against the Saints on Sunday?
Here’s all you need to know about Brock Purdy’s injury ahead of the game against the Saints.
It’s double trouble for 49ers QB Brock Purdy, who is fighting to be fit for Week 2 after suffering both shoulder and toe injuries in the opening game of the 2025 NFL season.
On Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed the news that the Arizona native’s non-throwing shoulder was causing him pain after taking a hit, and so was his toe, and that his match availability would be assessed at a later date. “We’ve got to see how it heals and how the week goes on it,” he said. It appears to be a waiting game to see if he’s fit enough to feature.
Curiously, Purdy played the full opening fixture as San Francisco beat the Seattle Seahawks 17-13; he completed 26 of 35 passes for 277 yards and managed two touchdowns and two interceptions. It’s unclear at what point in the game he began to feel discomfort in his toe.
Next 24 hours key for Purdy’s chances
Taking over Purdy should he not be able to start would be Mac Jones, who was another topic of conversation during Shanahan’s press appearance: “He’s gotten really used to what we do. He had a good week of practice last week picking up really right where he left off. If he has to go this week, he’ll lead the guys, the guys will believe in him, and I know he’ll do his job at a high level.”
“I think it has to do with really how Brock is probably over these next 24 hours [and] throughout the week,” Shanahan said. “That’s stuff we’ll look into.”
As well as the worries over Purdy, fans are also sweating on the fitness of George Kittle, who has been ruled out for a number of weeks with a hamstring issue. Putting the player on injured reserve is “always a possibility,” according to Shanahan, who added that “in order to do that, it’s got to be a four-week injury, so I don’t think we’ve decided on that yet.”
