Chiefs dealt offseason blow as Rashee Rice heads to jail for 30 days
The Kansas City receiver tested positive for THC and will serve a 30-day sentence, impacting the team’s 2026 offseason preparations.

Off-field issues have once again caught up with Rashee Rice. The Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver has been sentenced to 30 days in jail after violating the terms of his probation by testing positive for THC, a development that will sideline him for organized team activities (OTAs) and the team’s mandatory minicamp.
The ruling was handed down by a court in Dallas and carried out immediately. Rice had previously received a deferred sentence related to a 2024 car accident in which he faced charges for speeding and causing injuries. As part of that agreement, the receiver was required to comply with strict conditions during his probation period.
The second time was the charm for Rice
The failed drug test automatically triggered the pending punishment. According to court reports, Rice began serving his sentence this Tuesday and is expected to remain in custody until mid-June, preventing him from participating in key parts of Kansas City’s offseason program.

The news comes as a setback for the Chiefs at a crucial stage of preparation. Rice was projected to play a central role in the offense led by Patrick Mahomes heading into the 2026 season, especially after showing flashes of high-level production in previous campaigns despite injuries and suspensions.
The receiver has already faced on-field consequences tied to his legal history. In 2025, he was handed a six-game suspension under the NFL personal conduct policy stemming from the Dallas incident. This latest development once again puts his future into question.
Kansas City has yet to release an official statement, but Rice’s absence will force adjustments within the offense during the coming weeks. OTAs and minicamp are typically critical for building chemistry and refining schemes ahead of training camp.

Beyond the immediate impact, the situation also renews concerns about player conduct across the league and how teams manage young talent in high-pressure environments. Rice, widely viewed as one of the most promising receivers of his generation, now finds his development interrupted once again by off-field trouble.
As the Chiefs gear up for another season with championship aspirations, one of their key offensive weapons will spend the summer away from the field, and behind bars.
