A QB holdout… for Jacoby Brissett? What it means for the Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals aren’t off to a great start as they begin OTAs as their starting quarterback Jacoby Brisett continues his contract holdout.

Update:

The Arizona Cardinals opened OTAs this week with a notable absence, albeit a bit of an unusual one. Jacoby Brissett, the team’s expected starting quarterback, was not on the field.

While OTA absences are not uncommon across the NFL, this one has drawn extra attention. Not because of what Brissett is, but because of what he isn’t. Brissett is not a franchise cornerstone, a superstar, or a player typically associated with high-profile contract standoffs.

Cardinals drama grows as Brissett’s contract holdout continues

Brissett’s absence from OTAs is tied to contract negotiations. The 33-year-old quarterback is entering the final year of his deal, with only about $1.5 million guaranteed, and is seeking more long-term security as Arizona’s presumed starter.

From a purely financial standpoint, the move is understandable. Brissett stepped in last season and produced respectable numbers, over 3,300 passing yards with 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions after taking over for Kyler Murray.

But beyond the stats, it’s not so simple. Arizona went just 1-11 in his starts.

Brissett is a veteran journeyman who has played for multiple teams, often as a bridge or backup option rather than a long-term answer. His career has been defined more by reliability and opportunity than dominance. A quarterback widely viewed as a short-term solution is holding out as if he were a foundational piece. And whether justified or not, it forces a larger conversation about the team around him.

A franchise in transition

The Cardinals’ quarterback situation has been in flux since the decision to move on from Kyler Murray earlier this offseason. Brissett was elevated into the starting role, but the team’s actions suggest anything but long-term certainty.

Arizona added Gardner Minshew as a veteran option and drafted Carson Beck, a developmental prospect who could eventually challenge for the job.

At the same time, the franchise is adjusting to a new head coach in Mike LaFleur and installing a new offensive system, a process that typically requires full participation from the starting quarterback, especially during early offseason practices.

Brissett’s absence, even if technically permissible during voluntary workouts, comes at a moment when continuity should be a priority. Instead, it highlights instability.

From Brissett’s perspective, the logic is there. He is the current QB1, he produced solid numbers last season, and he is seeking security in a league where starting opportunities can disappear quickly. But leverage in the NFL is not just about depth charts. It is about perception.

Around the league, Brissett is not viewed in the same tier as quarterbacks who typically force contract decisions. So rather than applying pressure on the organization, it risks reinforcing doubts about both player and team direction.

Some analysts have already questioned whether the move is a miscalculation, particularly given Arizona’s flexibility at the position and willingness to explore alternatives. If anything, the situation may accelerate competition rather than resolve it.

For now, the situation remains fluid. OTAs are voluntary, and the true pressure point will come with mandatory minicamp, where absences carry financial penalties. Between now and then, both sides face decisions.

Brissett must determine how far he is willing to push for security in a situation where his leverage is limited. The Cardinals must decide whether he is worth committing to or simply keeping the seat warm for what comes next. Either way, the outcome will say a lot about where this franchise believes it is headed, and whether Jacoby Brissett is part of that future or just a placeholder in it.
