Cowboys special teams coach John Fassel departs shortly after Mike McCarthy
The Dallas Cowboys parted ways with head coach Mike McCarthy after their losing season, and now they say goodbye to their special teams coach John Fassel.

The Dallas Cowboys finished a disaster of a season with a 7-10 record. As head coach Mike McCarthy’s contract came to an end, the two decided to part ways when the season was over.
Now, special teams coordinator John Fassel has followed suit, leaving the Cowboys to join the Tennessee Titans.

Fassel was the Cowboys' special teams coordinator throughout McCarthy’s tenure with the team, starting in 2020. During his five-year tenure with the team, the Cowboys' special teams unit was ranked as one of the best in the league, and he was well-liked by the players.
Kicker Brandon Aubrey and punt returner KaVontae Turpin both earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors as part of Fassel’s special teams unit.
Earlier this month, Fassel had expressed his desire to return to Dallas, but also spoke about the stress that McCarthy’s contract situation added to the situation.
“Obviously, we all want to come back,” Fassel said at the time. “But if that’s not the case, we’ll scour the wire and see if we can find something else…It’s going to be stressful. But I’m excited also to see what’s next.”
Aubrey expressed his wish for both McCarthy and Fassel to have remained part of the Cowboys' organization.
“The culture [Mike McCarthy] created for us has been incredible,” Aubrey said on the ‘Kickin It With Dee’ podcast. “He’s a player’s coach just like [Fassel]. In an ideal world, for me, I’d have him and [Fassel] back. Obviously, we don’t live in that world. So, we’ll just wait and see what we got and go with it from there.”
