Cowboys waive Garibay, sign Maher

The Cowboys finally made a decision regarding the kicker, and it’s not regarding either of the players they initially thought it would be. They brought in four free agents to practice yesterday after neither Garibay nor Lirim Hajrullahu made an impression in camp.

“The kicker’s job is to kick the ball through the goal posts, whatever the situation is,” Cowboys vice president of player personnel Will McClay said. “So we’re looking for guys that can do that more consistently.”

Later in the day, they released Garibay and signed veteran Brett Maher. Maher is familiar with the Cowboys as he played for them from 2018-2019, making the four longest field goals in Cowboys’ history.

Maher will now be competing with Hajrullahu for the kicker spot.

Barr and Parson could “switch up”

Since the Cowboys signed linebacker Anthony Barr, he and Micah Parsons have already clicked, despite the fact that Barr has yet to actually practice. At the moment, Barr is on the Physically Unable to Perform list while he gets accustomed to things on the team. But Parsons seems to think he knows how Barr will be utilized, and it’s not just as a blocker.

“Don’t forget, Barr told me he likes to rush too, so to have that switch-up - it’ll be nice,” said Parsons.

Vice President of Player Personnel, Will McClay, also emphasized the possibility of a very versatile defense this year.

“He brings another element to the defense where you can move certain guys around,” said McClay. “You can put Micah over here, you can put Leighton in a certain spot, you can bring a safety down. [Barr] gives you so much flexibility, defensive-wise, to do a number of different things.”

It definitely looks like Dan Quinn plans to use Barr the same way he plans to use Parson, switching up their roles so the opponent doesn’t know what to expect

Cowboys training camp MVP

Cowboys training camp is coming to a close as the preseason approaches. The MVP of the camp has been chosen, and it’s not who you’d expect.

Cornerback Anthony Brown was the man of the camp - not Trevon Diggs. It’s a good sign that Brown is showing out considering Dallas is now without Randy Gregory. Tyler Smith was chosen to try to fill that void a bit, and if Brown can help that along, all the better.
