Daniel Jones became a free agent on Friday. The 27-year-old brings to an end his six years with the Giants - released on his request after the humiliation of losing his place to third-choice Tommy DeVito.

Giants president John Mara gave more details in a statement. “Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him. We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team. Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future”.

Jones' best figures in 2022

After graduating from Duke, Jones was selected by the Giants as the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft. He signed a four-year rookie contract worth $25,664,056 but the franchise would eventually opt against picking up the fifth-year option.

In 2022/23, he led New York to their first winning season since 2016 (9-7) with the team going onto beat Minnesota in the wild-card round of the NFC playoffs before taking a 7-38 thrashing to the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round.

During the postseason, Jones signed a four-year extension with the Giants for $160 million with $81 million guaranteed and a base salary of $46 million in his first year, dropping to $36 million in 2024.

Overall, during his time in New York, Danny Dimes has earned a combined total of $108,129,056.

Jones benched by Daboll

Coach Brian Daboll benched Jones on Monday on the Giants' return to practice following a bye week. Daboll confirmed that Tommy DeVito will start Sunday’s Week 12 home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Jones meanwhile begins the search for a new team with hopes of remaining in the NFL.

His figures for the season were discreet - Jones completed just 63% of his passes for 2,070 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.
